Urban Indian Women (working age group of 25-45 years) total at around 128 million. As per a recent survey, 30% of these women felt ‘Unsupported’ during and post Pregnancy, 44% had weight gain, 38% reported mental wellbeing as a concern and 28% had failed lactation post child birth. This led to only 27% women joining back at work post child birth with only a dismal 16% advancing in their careers to senior positions. (World bank report 2017-Policy Research Working Paper 8004 and Genpact Women survey 2021). Despite witnessing an economic boom, unlike other countries that have undergone similar transitions, urban Indian women’s employment has refused to budge, never crossing the 25 percent mark. World Bank had called this India’s ‘Motherhood Penalty’. As per evidence-based research by Anthony A. Rafferty etal June 2021- Nutritionjrnl.com, ‘Diet and mental health in pregnancy: Nutrients of importance based on large observational cohort data’- introduction of a Structured Program. of evidence- based Diet and Nutrition, Exercises, Mental Health Advice and proper Post Natal care (assisted by a service similar to ‘Mid-Wifery’ in the western countries) can alleviate this ‘Motherhood Penalty’ to a large extent.
